What is Landscape Architecture ?
Essentially, Landscape Architecture is the art and science of creating outdoor spaces.
While designing outdoor spaces, a landscape architect is consistently solving problems in creative and cost
effective ways. Thinking "outside the box" is essential to a landscape architect.
An important factor in Landscape Architecture is connecting architecture with the surrounding landscape so that
each compliment one another and bring out each others best features.
The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) defines landscape architecture as "the profession that
encompasses the analysis, planning, design, management, and stewardship of the natural and built
environments. Types of projects include: residential; parks and recreation; monuments; urban design;
streetscapes and public spaces; transportation corridors and facilities; gardens and arboreta; security design;
hospitality and resorts; institutional; academic campuses; therapeutic gardens; historic preservation and
restoration; reclamation; conservation; corporate and commercial; landscape art and earth sculpture; interior
landscapes; and more. Landscape architects have advanced education and professional training.
As defined above, the field of Landscape architecture is one that encompasses a wide range of specializations.
Some landscape architects have an interest in working on large scale projects that usually involve working with
other design professionals, planning boards, and city council members. Some landscape architects prefer
working on smaller scale projects such as residential properties, where they can work on a more intimate level
with the homeowner.
A landscape architect must be an extremely well-rounded individual, with the ability to think with both their right and
left brain simultaneously. This is an extremely rare quality to find in individuals, and this is why Landscape Architects
are so important in improving the aesthetics and function of the land we live on.

Total Landscape Care, January 2007
"Landscaping is one way to increase a home's value. The general rule of thumb is that you get back 100 percent to
200 percent of what you invest in landscaping when you sell your home".
National Association of Realtors' Realtor Magazine, August 2005
"Homeowners should spend between 10 percent and 20 percent of their home’s value on landscaping".
Professional Landcare Network, 2004
"Homes that have been professionally landscaped can fetch 15 percent to 20 percent more at the time of resale
than homes that lack landscaping".
Guide for Plant Appraisal, 9th ed., Council of Tree & Landscape Appraisers, 2003
"Homes with nice landscaping are likely to see sale prices that are 4 percent to 5 percent higher compared to similar properties
in the neighborhood, according to the Guide for Plant Appraisal, published by the International Society of Arboriculture. And
homes with landscapes that are not as nice as others in the neighborhood could see sales prices that are 8 percent to 10
percent lower".
"Eighty-four percent of the real estate agents interviewed for the study said a house with trees would be as much as 20 percent
more salable than a house without trees".
National Gardening Association
"According to the National Gardening Association, homeowners spent $36.8 billion on lawns and gardens in 2003, of which $11.4
billion was spent on landscaping. And no wonder—it offers the best return on investment of any home improvement you can
make. Many savvy homeowners are hiring landscape architects to help them realize their dreams. Here are some tips to help you
make an educated choice: Think about what you want and how you will use your landscape. Formal entertaining, herb gardens,
and children’s playgrounds are all possibilities. Don’t limit yourself to plants and trees; maybe you would like a fence, a fountain, a
deck, a patio, or other outdoor element".
+ Make a realistic budget. One rule of thumb is to invest 5 to 10 percent of your house’s worth. If this seems steep, consider that
appropriate landscape improvements are estimated to return 100 to 200 percent of their cost when a house is sold.
